Weekend Project: 2 Liter Bottle Recycling

Beating The Bottled Water Habit

What's bad about drinking lots of water in plastic bottles? Well, maybe just about everything. Billions of plastic bottles have to be manufactured. The water put in those bottles is not well regulated. The plastic bottles of water are expensive. Those plastic bottles will one day likely wind up in a dump. The good news is that it is easy to break the plastic bottle habit and drink good quality water without spending a lot of money.

Approximately 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown away in the U.S. each hour according to the Clean Air Council. There are approximately 8,765 hours in a year. I'll let you do the math on thrown away plastic water bottles.

Bottled water is under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration because it is considered a food. Tap water, on the other hand, is much more strictly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Municipal water systems must test for harmful microbiological content in water several times a day, bottled water companies are required to test for these microbes only once a week, according to the All About Water web site. So maybe that bottled water isn't really worth paying for.

Whether you wish to use fewer plastic bottles because of the environment or just to save money, it is an easy change to make. The first thing you should do is purchase a good filter pitcher. Brita and Pur are two of the best known brands. You can get one for under $20.

The typical 24 bottle case of water contains around three gallons and costs from $1.33 to $1.75 per gallon. A bright young college student reported on the Internet that it costs between 13 cents and 21 cents per gallon of filtered water depending on which brand you buy. So after you buy a few reusable water bottles for $5 to $15 each it won't be long before you are saving a bundle.

In addition to the reusable water bottles and the filter pitcher you will want to get several one gallon containers to hold your filtered water. This allows you to pour up filtered water throughout the day so that you will always have a sufficient amount on hand. Once you get used to doing this as part of your routine it won't be a bother.

As a result of your efforts you will save money and add no more plastic bottles to our landfills

any tips for weaning my 20 mo old daughter off 2 bottles a day? Please save the lectures, I know I know. Help!?

She's down to 2, 4 ounce bottles a day. Her bedtime bottle is the hardest, she screams without it. I don't want to start using a paci and it breaks my heart to hear her cry like that. I'll probably just have to bite the bullet and deal with her crying but any tips would be great, thanks!

my daughter is the same age and we just got rid of bottles all we did was threw every bottle away and put everything in cups and at first she didn't want anything to do with the cups but she got thirsty and would drink a little and after a few days she stopped crying for the bottle and now only drinks from a cup
good luck!
